SPT-1 vs. SPT-2 Wire: What Is the Difference?

If you are planning a custom Christmas light run, SPT-1 and SPT-2 can look almost interchangeable. They are not. The short answer is that the number identifies a difference in insulation thickness: SPT-1 is the thinner option, while SPT-2 has thicker insulation. UL's wire and cable guide describes SPT as parallel cord with thermoplastic insulation and explains that the -1, -2, and -3 suffixes progress from thinner to thicker insulation for applicable cord types.[1]
That does not make SPT-2 automatically better, and it does not give every SPT-2 cord a higher amp rating. The right choice depends on the exact wire gauge, product marking, compatible connectors, intended location, run length, and electrical load. Choose the complete system, not the wire name alone.

What does SPT mean?
UL identifies SPT-2 as parallel cord with thermoplastic insulation. Its marking guide also explains that the numeric suffixes indicate relative insulation thickness for some cord types, with -1 thinner than -2 and -2 thinner than -3. UL cautions that actual insulation thickness varies with insulation type and AWG size.[1]
That last point matters. A common manufacturer specification lists 18/2 SPT-1 with a nominal 0.030-inch insulation thickness and 18/2 SPT-2 with a nominal 0.045-inch thickness. Those figures are useful comparison examples, not a substitute for the specification of the cord in your hand.[2]
The main difference is insulation thickness
For cord of the same conductor gauge and configuration, the SPT-2 designation calls for thicker insulation than SPT-1. That can change the cord's overall dimensions and the connector designed to fit it. It does not, by itself, tell you the allowable load, location rating, or whether every component belongs in the same assembly.[1][2]

Does SPT-2 carry more amps than SPT-1?
Not automatically. The SPT number describes an insulation-thickness category, not a universal amp rating. In one manufacturer's lamp-cord table, the listed 18/2 SPT-1 and 18/2 SPT-2 examples have different insulation thicknesses but the same listed ampacity. The same table lists a different rating for one 16/2 SPT-2 configuration. That is a useful illustration of why gauge and the exact product specification matter.[2]
For a Christmas light run, verify all of the following before you calculate or connect a load:
- The wire type and conductor gauge
- The marked electrical rating of the exact cord
- The ratings and compatibility of plugs, sockets, connectors, bulbs, and other components
- The total wattage or amperage of the finished run
- The intended location and the manufacturer's instructions
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission treats minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, and overcurrent protection as important observable safety characteristics for seasonal and decorative lighting products.[4] Do not use insulation thickness as a shortcut for those separate requirements.
Can you use SPT-1 connectors on SPT-2 wire?
Do not assume the connectors are interchangeable. Match the connector to the exact cord type and gauge identified by the manufacturer. Dekra-Lite's current product pages pair SPT-1 Quick-Attach connectors with its SPT-1 wire spools, and identify its SPT-2 Quick-Attach connectors as 18-gauge connectors for its SPT-2 wire spools.[6][7]
A connector that looks close is not enough. Confirm the SPT type, conductor gauge, connector instructions, and any other product-specific requirements before assembly.
Is SPT-1 or SPT-2 better for outdoor Christmas lights?
Neither label answers that question by itself. UL's marking guide uses other markings, including a final W for suitable wet-location use in applicable cord types, to communicate location characteristics.[1] ESFI separately recommends that outdoor decorations and extension cords be marked for outdoor use.[5]
Check the intended-use marking and instructions for the exact wire, connectors, sockets, bulbs, and completed lighting system. Thicker insulation is not a substitute for an outdoor-use marking.
How to choose between SPT-1 and SPT-2
1. Start with the system you already have
If you are extending an existing system, identify its cord type, gauge, connectors, sockets, voltage, and product markings. Stay within the manufacturer's documented component system unless the manufacturer provides another approved configuration.
2. Verify the exact wire and gauge
Do not order from the SPT name alone. Two products can share an SPT designation while differing in gauge, length, socket spacing, electrical rating, or intended use. Southwire's current SPT-2 manufacturer page, for example, lists both 18-AWG and 16-AWG constructions under the SPT-2 family.[3]
3. Match every connector
Use the connector identified for the specific SPT type and gauge. This is one of the easiest mismatches to prevent because the product owner should state what it is designed to fit.
4. Calculate the actual load
Add the load of the bulbs or decorations on the run, then compare it with the marked ratings and instructions for every component. ESFI recommends matching the amperage needs of electrical products with the amperage rating of the cord.[5] If you are uncertain about the load, circuit, permanent wiring, or code requirements, stop and have a qualified electrical professional review the plan.
5. Confirm the installation location
For outdoor displays, use products marked for outdoor use, inspect the system before use, connect outdoor decorations to GFCI-protected circuits, and keep cords and light strings clear of snow and standing water. Those are current ESFI recommendations for outdoor holiday decorations.[5]

What is the difference between SPT-1 and SPT-2 wire?
